After diving the Barracuda or Cantrel Reefs, this shallow site with incredible marine life makes for an excellent second dive site on Cozumel. Situated near the northern part of Cozumel and featuring finger corals, lettuce corals, French grunts and some ledges where French grunts may be observed; moreover this dive site becomes particularly popular during spotted eagle ray migration periods which usually run between mid-January to early March.
Walls at this dive site boast vibrant hues and the marine life is equally as eye-catching, including sting rays, scorpionfish, octopus, and reef fish. While diving this current can prove challenging, experienced divers will have no trouble spotting larger marine animals such as sting rays. Furthermore, this dive site makes an ideal backdrop for photographs.
At 50 feet depth, these walls curve and provide divers with caves and tunnels to explore, as well as being home for Cozumel splendid toadfish endemic to Cozumel. Yucab Reef Strip offers some of Cozumel’s best diving for drift divers. A spectacular, shallow reef strip filled with plenty of marine life such as butterflyfish and angelfish as well as wrasses and damselfish. Divers can also look out for shrimps and crabs hiding within reef crevices.
Yucab Reef’s low profile and generally flat terrain makes it an excellent place for novice divers to practice drift diving techniques, while also making for an excellent choice for experienced divers who can tolerate currents of up to 80 feet depths and dive depths of 80 feet or greater. A former US Navy minesweeper intentionally sunk in 2000 to make way for new reef growth now houses various fascinating creatures like nudibranchs and octopus, making this site great for photography divers as well.
